Career Day

On April 25, our Student Council hosted a Career Day for 3rd and 4th graders. Each class was able to listen to 3 or 4 adults who came in to talk to us about their jobs. Our class listened to 4 speakers. They were Mr. Lewis, Mr. Inniss, Mrs. Clark and Mr. McClay.

Our first speaker was Mr. Lewis. Mr. Lewis is a train engineer for BNSF. An engineer drives a train on the railroad. A train can weigh up to 2,000 tons and be up to 2 miles long! We also learned that sometimes Mr. Lewis has to travel long distances for his job and has to be away from his family.

Our second speaker was Mrs. Clark. Mrs. Clark is a cardiac ICU nurse. We learned that ICU stands for Intensive Care Unit. After patients have heart surgery, they come to Mrs. Clark, where she takes care of them and makes sure they get the things they need.

Our third speaker was Mr. Inniss. Mr. Inniss is a 4-H Coordinator at the U of I Extension Office. He helps organize different events for 4-H members. For instance, last Friday, he helped organize a welding event for kids. We learned that the 4-H motto is “Make the Best Better!” We already have a classmate that is a 4-H member and maybe more of us will join!

Our last speaker of the morning was Mr. McClay. He is a landscape designer for a nursery. Mr. McClay designs yards and patios around houses to help make them more beautiful. We were excited to learn that Mr. McClay uses math formulas that we are currently using in our classroom. He said that he has to use Area=Length x Width almost every day!

Thank you to all of our Career Day speakers. We are really glad you were able to come in to help us learn more about your job.

Do you have a Career Day at your school? If you do, what types of careers did you discover?

What career will you choose when you grow up? Why?

If you’re an adult, what is your career? Please tell us about it!

Hockey – A Guest Post by Nolan

A lot of people think hockey is boring, but if you think about it sounds pretty fun. Hockey is a hard sport. It is hard because you have to wear heavy gear, you are on ice, you have to carry a stick and you have to put a puck in a goal.

2013 Chicago Blackhawk season.
The Blackhawks are a hockey team. The Blackhawks were a good team last year because they won the Stanley Cup. The Stanley Cup is a reward for winning the championship. One of the players won the Conn Smyth trophy. The Blackhawks went through a lot of steps to win the Stanley Cup. The Blackhawks had to get 2 goals to win and they scored 2 goals in 17 seconds.

Have you ever been to a hockey game before? If you have, do you want to go to another game? Who did you see play?

Since you have read my post, do you like hockey?

The Wonderful World of Plants

Lately, we have been studying plants. We have been working very hard to learn about different types of plants and what they need to survive. We know that plants need water, sunlight, air and nutrients. Most plants gets their nutrients from the soil, but there are a few plants that get nutrients in other ways. For instance, the Venus Fly Trap gets its nutrients from the flies that it eats!

There are many different types of plants that grow all over the world. In one article we read, we learned that palm trees grow in warm areas. We probably could not grow them here in Illinois!

We have done a little research and gathered the names of some plants that grow in our area. The most obvious is corn and soybeans. These two plants can be found in fields all around our homes and even our school!

What types of plants grow in your area? Please comment and share your findings with us! We look forward to learning about different types of plants and where they grow!
